Two Colts

A Poem
by
Laraine

One colt is black, shiny, and small;

One colt is black, shiny, and tall.

One colt is held tight, safe, and near;

One colt is held tight, safe, and dear.

One colt is cleaned, protected, and locked;

One colt is cleaned, protected, and rocked.

One colt is loud, deadly, and wrong;

One colt is soft, loving, and strong.

One colt is forceful as it bolts through the air;

One colt is graceful as it gallops on air.

One colt protects with a bullet of metal;

One colt protects with a heart kind and gentle.

One colt is cold, hard, and unfeeling;

One colt is warm with affection unyielding,

One colt is kept under a pillow at night;

One colt is kept under a blanket ‘til light.

One colt brings loneliness, pain, and sorrow;

One colt gives friendship and hope for tomorrow.

One colt is accepted as a way of his life;

One colt is loved as a part of his life.

And at their end. . .

One colt will be remembered by him through the years;

With shame, regret, and angry tears.

And . . .

One colt will be remembered by him through the years;

With love, respect, and sentimental tears.
