The press kit -- "Showman's Manual" -- sent to local theaters showing Kitten with a Whip seems as unsophisticated in the 90's as do the old advertisements from the turn of the century. They include examples for submission to women's sections of newspapers with headlines like "Negligees for the Trousseau Minded - Ann-Margret Has Some Suggestions for You" and "Copy Your Cat and Improve Your Figure - Ann-Margret Exemplifies Feline Grace". There were also a selection of posters some of which are shown below as well as write-ups on the stars. The kits also announced the availability of radio interviews with Ann-Margret and John Forsythe in which "All questions and answers are accurately timed to create the illusion that the star personally is being interviewed by an announcer at a local radio station."
The Press Kits suggested tie-ins with an odd assortment of merchandise not all of which had an obvious connection to anything that occurs in the movie: pets, perfume, towels, furs, motor bikes and portable phonographs.
Peter Brown's press kit write-up is titled,
"Actor Peter Brown Declines to Limit Himself to Acting"
The interview starts out, "'An actor works in a make-believe world, but he should not live in one' declares Peter Brown, handsome young thespian featured in Universal's 'Kitten with a Whip,' starring Ann-Margret and John Forsythe, now at the ________ Theatre." Apparently, Peter recognizes that acting is a perishable business and advises actors to take advantage of their dry spells to develop other skills. According the the interview, Peter was studying directing and production and going to night school to learn Spanish. The latter was part of a plan to buy a ranch in Mexico to raise bulls for the bullfighting arena. According this release, Peter had made the acquaintance of the leading names in the profession and was learning the art himself. We have to admit, this bullfighting connection made most of our NiteOwls group squeamish although we have no information that this plan came to fruition. But we did notice that when the script called for it, Peter spoke an excellent, well-accented Spanish in Laredo. And he did put the production skills to work later, including in a movie he produced starring William Smith - Gentle Savage. He currently has a production company.AND NOW, THE POSTERS
