Jason of Star Command apparently started in the 1978-79 season as an element of a children's series called Tarzan and the Super 7 which included separate installments of seven groups of adventurers including Tarzan, Web Woman, Batman & Robin, The Freedom Force (Isis, Super-Samurai, Sinbad, Merlin, and Hercules), Micro Woman and Super Stretch, Moray and Manta, and Jason and the Star Command. In the 1979-80, 1980-81 seasons it played as a separate series. John was only in the last season. The copies we have came (2nd hand) from it's run on the SciFi Channel where it played on Sundays. The series used a cliff-hanger serial format and would have easily fit in with the kind of cheesy children's space adventures that baby boomers watched in the 1950's (like Captain Video and the early Buck Rogers). We hated seeing John Russell reduced to playing this kind of humiliating part after the wonderful dignity of Lawman. In any event, we saw nothing to love about this derivative series. Jason, an obvious Hans Solo imitation. was aided in his fight against the evil Dragos (Sid Haig) and his minions by the nerdy Professor Parsafoot, the beauteous Samantha (a black character reminiscent of Star Trek's Uhuru but at least she got to be a pilot) and a Commander played in the second season by Russell in blue make-up and a geometric haircut reminiscent of the greenish-skinned Spock (no pointy ears) and a cutesy little pocket robot with a childish voice. [The Commander was played in the first season by James Doohan, Scotty from Star Trek who may have been rescued from this humiliating show by the success of Star Trek: The Movie which was released in 1979.] As in most SciFi of the period, the women wore micro-minis or spandex while the men had less revealing uniforms.

If anyone with a nostalgic affection for this show would like to write a more positive review, we'd be glad to post it. It's unlikely that anyone who grew up with Lawman and a strong affection for John Russell could feel anything about it but vicarious humiliation.Comments? Trivia? Suggestions?
