Old Stefano is a sheepherder whose dog dies when the vet is rushed off to treat Tracy McNeil's horse.   McNeil is a shady character who seems to be courting Lily somewhat to Johnny's amusement.  When Old Stefano shoots McNeil's horse (which the doctor wanted put down anyway due to its injury) Dan has to go out and question him.  He's ambushed by McNeil who wants to make a land grab and needs to get Dan out of the way.
