When  Sioux Chief Red Horse's son is murdered, he holds Johnny hostage and gives Dan until the next morning to find the killer.  Running Deer's betrothed was having an affair with Indian trader Gruber.  He is the killer who is eventually brought to justice when the girl cannot keep silent and see Johnny killed.
