Major Leeds from Fort Laramie secures an appointment to West Point for Johnny.  He's upset when Johnny doesn't immediately decide to accept.  Leeds accuses Dan of holding him back.  Although when he's not in Johnny's presence it seems Dan is bereft at the thought of losing Johnny, he's careful not to let Johnny know.  He wants Johnny to make up his own mind.  Major Leeds is adamant that Johnny accept.  However, when Johnny stops a gun fight between the Major and a vengeful soldier, the Major immediately concludes that civilian lawmen like Johnny are also vital to the West.
