During a fierce storm, a man from Lily's distant past, Galt Stevens, seems to be stalking her.  She finds a book of Robert Browning's poetry marked at Porphyria's Lover, a poem that has a sinister meaning for her.  The girl in the poem is murdered when her jealous lover strangles her with her own long yellow hair.  Galt Stevens used to call her Porphyria and when she refused to marry him, killed a boy who was walking her home.   Her testimony sent him to prison for life.  Even when she sees a man standing in her room that night, Dan insists she's imagining things due to wind, nerves and bad dreams.  The next morning Dan sends her only protection, her bartender, out to help Johnny clean up storm damage.  He's sorry about that when Lily turns up missing and the first telegram over the newly repaired wires informs him that Galt Stevens has escaped from prison.
