When Jed Barrister is led to the gallows at Fort Laramie, he shots out to an unseen cohort that he wants Dan Troop killed in exchange for all the loot that was never recovered.  Johnny hears the threat and when he gets back to Laramie, he's suspicious of every stranger that comes to town.
