Gard Washington is a wanted man who wants to collect the $1000 reward on himself to give him a stake when he gets out of prison.  Dan puts him in jail, but the dective agency offering the reward won't pay.  They have another offer however:  turn in some of his friends and collect half the rewards on them.  After he refuses, he tells Dan he'll try to break out if he can.  He has the parts for a derringer in the heels of his boot but he uses his one bullet scaring off a man trying to shoot Dan throught the back window of the jail.  Dan tells Gard to serve his five years and there will be a job waiting when he gets out.
