Cassie Nickerson is the victim of an abusive, loud-mouthed husband.  Bull Nickerson makes a play for Lily, is clearly tired of his wife, but makes it clear no one leaves him.  When Cassie runs off with sweet-tempered peddler Jed Pennyman, Bull is out for blood.
